It's priceless!  Honestly, my friends and family can verify this, my most valued possesions, besides family photos are my audios from professional mentors !!!!

You see..........when I started my career in the late 70's of being a Golf Superintendent, I was 23 years old. I knew I had taken on a challenging career position, I was not over-whelmed (not even close to being intimidated) - hey I was enthusiastic even though I had a speech challenge (according to others) ...to  me, there was no speech problem. Even though situations like not being able to make myself heard at the time,when standing near some golf course equipment with the engine running.......

........or if out at a club with live music....(like when the band is really loud), if I said something to someone,they couldn't always hear me because of "the noise".

Well, as it turns out I did have to get fitted for and wear a prosthesis to help me speak after about five years into my career. No biggie right, except it does affect one's self-concept and confidence..........

                                       and, ..........I am a big strong guy, handsome enough, I was perhaps a bit self-conscious though,(at the time).....maybe a bit shy.............lol

                                               still...........I had everything going for myself right? 

             The truth was ........... I hated to admit it.............    My self-confidence wasn't optimum.  (sigh....)

How did I solve my self-confidence challenge? One thing I started doing was I started listening to Tony Robbins on audio cassettes. His Peronal Power tapes, remember those??  Where did I get those cassettes?....... through an infomercial.

  ................Yepp, it was true, I was confident enough to take to the next level within the golf course industry, .......I wanted to change my career though!

I knew intuitively that listening to audios like those from Tony Robbins would only enhance my chances of succeeding in terms of self-esteem, or self-concept........... maybe it was a speech problem that seemed to be holding me back. Actually I found out later that it was "other peoples perception of me that was was adversely affecting my own self-concept. How is that so?  Public reaction to my "speech challenge"!               

.........Not pleasant right? It was kind of an awkward feeling........ok, what do I do now, I had a good job.....a career opportunity right?  Having a postion a golf superintendant at a golf course in a small, yet fairly prominent tourist destination town on the road from Sudbury to Sault St Marie, and yet after a few years, it didn't seem to be satisfying to me......... I started feeling the tinges of anxiety,....of frustration.......of the limitations of my career position - being a golf superintendent. This was my fourth year up north. I reside back in southern Ontario again now.

In my second year there, I did do a "talk" in Ottawa at one of our annual conferences.................so my so-called "speech problem or speech impediment" couldn't have been that bad right?.......my goodness.....so why wasn't I happy with my career? I enjoyed doing the talk. I had no fear actually, despite any speech difficulty! I had never really spoke in front 250 or so of my colleagues before ........let alone at a convention. Have you???  My townsfolk where I lived were very proud of me too!  Afterall, the talk I gave had been about that town and their golf course!!!!

 It's a proven fact that one of peoples worst fears is speaking in public! Not me though!

However, I had to admit that.......

   ............even though I had given a speech at a conference of my fellow professionals, I had a great job,a house,position,responsibility,..........things could be better,my life could be better.........................most importantly I could be doing much better.........................and I wanted a change!

          Folks,....this was 15 years ago........and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted the "dream life"

When I started my golf course maintenance career 30 years ago, I was successful. Don't get me wrong. I was having a blast! Afterall, I had a great career, right? I enjoyed success as a golf superintendent, so I enjoyed respect and popularity. I was an accepted member of the peer group. (my fellow golf superintendents were my peer group at the time) .................I enjoyed respect from my family.

As the years went by, I saw that hey, I'm working 80 - 90 hours a week, at that course in north ontario, I'm driving a chevy S-10, got a mortagage,working my heart out,........at the end of 94 golf season, I spent 2 months in the hospital from burnout. Man, was I BURNT-OUT!

So....I had time to think,........ and it was time to think...........and beleive you me, I did a lot of thinking.........like: why should I continue to work 80 hours a week,while the owners of the course I took care of drove cadillacs,why shouldn't I be driving a cadillac? They were earning 60 to 100k per year, I was earning 35k per year.

Then this self-dialogue began:

  Why shouldn't I be earning more than 100k per year????   Lord knows I was working hard enough! I was loyal, dedicated to my work.........

I could do that right?  If I was happy as a golf superintendent, I could have stayed in that career, and probably I would have gone on to "qualify myself professionally" to land a position at a "posh" or elite golf club, as an executive course super and earned more than 100k a year......and retired with a pension.........yadda,yadda,yadda......well, I'd be obliged to be at my place of work - the golf course! I didn't want that!

                                                        ..What I really wanted was freedom!

You see, I wanted to have "the lifestyle"  !!!!  I wanted the 6 digit income, the luxury, the time, more importantly the Freedom . I wanted to be able to do what I want, when I want and with whom I want to do it with.

I'll tell you, I sure did as a golf superintendent. I was working 80 -90 hours every week, 7 days a week! Man! I'd work 20 - 22 days in a row, then take a 3 day weekend, usually Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The only problem was, I'd spend all Friday night on the road; usually 5pm til 1am. I'd drive south from north Ontario to Hamilton to visit family and friends, then drive back to north Ontario Monday, leaving Hamilton Monday morning 10am.

You see, as a golf superintendent in a small town of 3,800 people, if I stayed in town on a weekend I had off, well truthfully, I was just a quick "phone call away". I was married to the golf course! If an irrigation line problem came up, or any other problem, I would get a phone call!  .......It was like this, my phone would ring,if I wasn't home they'd leave a message: " Peter, there's a problem on the 6th green, looks like some vandalism, and the green is unplayable, could you come in and take care of it?........or.......... "Peter, the night waterer, had a problem with the irrigation pump last night, we need you to come in and look at it"........... So you see, if I didn't vamoose out of town for the weekend, I could end up working all weekend!......there goes that weekend off!

Is your situation similar to my situation 15 years ago? No free time? Trying to raise a family? Jobs are scarce! Money is scarce! ...especially in these tough times of recession......March 07/09 this is written....maybe you a tradesperson with your own buisness? Are you a Plumber? Electrician? Maybe you're a security guard (lot's of those jobs around right now) the problem is you earn only ten or twelve dollars an hour, sound like your situation?   ..........maybe you're a factory worker, with more month left than money, at the end of the month?

Maybe you're on disability pension? or simply have too much time on your hands? Maybe your bored, and you know inside, there has too be a better tomorrow!!!! Tomorrow doesn't have to be like today, or yesterday!

Maybe, you feel like,.........heck I just want to better my life,.....better my situation?  .........maybe your not employed, or perhaps layed-off?  Maybe you would like to go back to school, but you can't quit working, because you need the income for your family????

Wait a minute, I gave a speech in front of 250 or so colleagues, how could I not have the self-confidence to attain the lifestyle I wanted, I can do anything given enough time I was saying to myself.......ah, but we need the right recources.......

Life Lesson: When your frustrated, even "restless",knowing that you want a change and it seems like your on a treadmill of getting nowhere, get outside yourself, get perspective, listen to some professionals on audio........it's what we do when we pick up a book, or go for a drive?..... isn't it. I pop a CD into my car stereo while I'm driving!

............Allright, .....I'll let you in on a secret......."The first audio cassettes I ever ordered were Personal Power tapes by Tony Robbins. I listened to those cassettes at least 30 times each! Those tapes were a huge inspiration for me, fifteen years ago.They gave me insight to help me to see outside my own mindset and thinking. Albert Einstein was right on the money saying what he said, a person has to change or improve his mindset to see beyond their challenge! It's so true! These "personal rescource audio's" will provide you with much needed perspective, that essential information to see the "big picture". Often in fact, these audio's can be like pieces of a jig-saw puzzle to bring you to an "aha moment". It's happened for me a gazillion times! I bought the "Personal Power" tapes through Tony's infommercial, however, I wanted more learning.

Oh yeah, listen, in 1992,when I bought my Tony Robbins tapes on Personal Power, I listened to those tapes all winter. I was seasonally employed at the time. During this time my perspective grew way beyond the growth you gain from everyday living.

I discovered "You can actually grow at an evolutionary rate!

I left the golf industry and went into sales in 95......of course with the helpful rescource of my Tony Robbins tapes, also "Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill, and "Psychology of Achievement" by Brian Tracy. I started selling vacuum cleaners in southern Ontario in 95! What a blast! With a strong sense of adventure, enthusiasm and and an  "I can't lose approach!"
